Immunization Policy Reinstated

Dear Pastors, Presidents, Principals, Teachers and Parents of the Diocese of Wichita,

On June 23rd, Bishop Kemme and I announced a change in the immunization policy for Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Wichita. This policy change was written after much thought and prayerful, collaborative, sincere discernment. It was our goal to adopt a policy that would support our pastors, principals, teachers and as many families as possible while keeping Catholic education strong and vibrant.

From the beginning, we recognized that immunization is a topic that has vast differences of belief and conviction within the diocesan Catholic community. That, along with the doubt, stresses, concerns and uncertainties we have all been feeling as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, have created an even-more challenging environment.

We have learned much throughout this process and taken to heart the feedback we received. In light of this, we have determined that now is not the time to revisit the existing immunization policy. We will reinstate the previous policy for the 2020-21 school year and go forward in dedicating our time and energy to the important matter of reopening our schools.

With the guidance of the Holy Spirit and with wise counsel, we will continue to study, pray and discern how best to serve the needs and interests of the families of our Catholic schools. We ask that you, the faithful of this diocese, support each other, pray for each other, and respect your fellow brothers and sisters. We look forward to working together for the benefit of Catholic education in the Diocese of Wichita.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Carl A. Kemme D.D.
Bishop of Wichita

Mrs. Janet Eaton
Superintendent of Catholic Schools
