Declaration of Year of St. Joseph 2020-2021

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On December 8, 2020, the Church will commemorate the 150^th anniversary of Quemadmodum Deus, the decree in 1870 by Pope Pius IX declaring St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church.  To observe this anniversary and to highlight the importance and efficacy of devotion to the intercession of St. Joseph, I wish to declare a special YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH, to be observed in the Diocese of Wichita from December 8, 2020 until December 7, 2021.

With the encouragement of many, I wish to invite all of our faithful to open their minds and hearts to increased devotion to St. Joseph and to join me in imploring his intercession during this challenging and uncertain time.  As bishop, I offer you this invitation for the following reasons.

1. We need the example and witness of St. Joseph now more than ever, for St. Joseph, the just man, was chosen by God to be the foster father of Jesus, the Incarnate Son of God. The Church here and everywhere, which we call the Mystical Body of Christ, is in need of the protection of our heavenly patron.
2. Joseph espoused himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joseph the faithful and chaste husband is a marvelous example for all husbands and fathers and as such can help the men of our diocese embrace this vocation and its essential duties with renewed fervor and dedication.
3. Joseph stands out as an exemplary example and model for priests and bishops, who, like St. Joseph are charged to oversee the family of the Church, to lead her in charity and truth toward eternal life. As in all times, the pope, the bishops and priests of the Church today need a powerful intercessor, like St. Joseph, to remain steadfast in their pastoral duties as shepherds and teachers.
4. One of our priorities in the Diocese of Wichita is to renew parish and family life. Joseph was a true family man, who worked hard to safeguard the Holy Family from danger and to provide for Jesus and Mary’s needs, in spite of the poverty they experienced.   Family life is under such attack.  We can unite ourselves more closely under the mantle of Mary and her most chaste spouse, St. Joseph to strengthen family life here in our local church.
5. Being thoroughly Jewish, the sabbath was critically important to the Holy Family. Joseph would have been instrumental in imparting the traditions of the Jewish faith and culture to his foster child, Jesus.   We can look to St. Joseph and the example he gave in this regard to help us reclaim the Christian sabbath, Sunday, as the Day of the Lord.
6. Joseph was a just man. All people, but especially the men of our culture need such a role model to live lives of justice, courage, purity of heart and body, commitment and accompaniment. In our fight against impurity, especially that brought on by the plague of pornography, St. Joseph, the chaste and holy man, can be a great example to inspire all of us to live lives of reclaimed purity and innocence.
7. In this time of uncertainty, we all need more father figures, especially in the spiritual realm. Joseph did not shrink away from his responsibilities as foster father and husband but accepted them with trust and courage.  We all need such fatherlike men in our lives, both naturally and spiritually to lead us through these dark and anxious times.
8. Father Kapaun’s middle name was Joseph and from all that we know of him and about him, he lived a true “Joseph” like manhood and priesthood. We all hope and pray that 2021 will bring good news about his cause.  Until then, let us continue to be inspired by his example and heroic witness in the darkest of times.  How St. Joseph must have inspired this Kansan farm boy and priest!

These are among the most important of my reasons for inviting us to reflect, pray for the intercession of and call upon St. Joseph in this diocese during this special Year dedicated to him.

Some may question the timing of this spiritual observance given that this year’s theme for renewal in Evangelization, Discipleship and Stewardship is Mary, the First Disciple and her FIAT.  I do not see this as a conflict but as complementary.  Mary, the first disciple can rightly be seen with Joseph nearby as her spouse and protector, her partner in their God given vocation.  Yes, Mary had her FIAT, but so did Joseph.  They both cooperated completely with the will of God.  I think it is entirely helpful to see them in relation to each other.  The thought-provoking statue of them in our Cathedral reminds us of this powerful truth. Just behind the Blessed Mother stands the strong, just and loving St. Joseph.  Let us remember that both Joseph and Mary stand before us and behind us in our efforts to evangelize, to live our discipleship and to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, just as they were.

I have asked a group from our diocesan curia to help me to plan for this year. More information and details will be available soon.   Among the ways we hope to promote devotion to St. Joseph in this special year are the following: special articles in the Catholic Advance about St. Joseph, encouragement to pray the 33-day consecration by Father Donald Calloway, praying the Litany of St. Joseph by families each day, consecrating the Diocese on January 1, 2021 to both the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, encouraging the faithful to make simple pilgrimages and offer prayers in parish churches dedicated to St. Joseph, encouraging everyone to make a visit to the Cathedral and to pray and reflect on the inspiring statue grouping of Joseph and Mary in the right alcove, inviting each family to display a picture or statue of St. Joseph in their home, providing formation about St. Joseph in our Catholic Schools and Formation programs, inviting our people to pray for more vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life and especially young men to consider discernment and formation in the St. Joseph House of Formation  and encouraging priests to preach on St. Joseph, especially on his principal feasts. I have also made a request to the Holy See to be able to grant under the usual conditions a plenary indulgence for this special year.  When I receive word, I will notify you about the details of this indulgence.      These are just some of the ideas that we are working on as we begin this special year of St. Joseph.

I wish to thank you in anticipation of graciously receiving my invitation to observe a Year of St. Joseph.  May the intercession of St. Joseph win for us numerous and important graces from Heaven, where he watches over the Church entrusted to his patronal care.  St. Joseph, pray for us!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

El 8 de diciembre de 2020, la Iglesia conmemorará el 150 aniversario de Quemadmodum Deus, un decreto de 1870 del Papa Pío IX que declara a San José Patrón de la Iglesia Universal. Para celebrar este aniversario y resaltar la importancia y eficacia de la devoción a la intercesión de San José, deseo declarar el año especial de San José, a ser observado en la Diócesis de Wichita desde el 8 de diciembre de 2020 hasta el 7 de diciembre de 2021.

Con el apoyo de muchos, deseo invitar a todos nuestros fieles a abrir sus mentes y corazones a una mayor devoción a San José y para que se unan a mí a implorar su intercesión durante este tiempo desafiante e incierto. Como obispo, les ofrezco esta invitación por las siguientes razones.

1. Necesitamos el ejemplo y el testimonio de San José ahora más que nunca, ya que San José, el hombre justo, fue elegido por Dios para ser el padre adoptivo de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios Encarnado. La Iglesia aquí y en todas partes, a la que llamamos el Cuerpo Místico de Cristo, necesita la protección de nuestro patrón celestial.
2. San José se desposó con la Santísima Virgen María. José, el esposo fiel y casto, es un ejemplo maravilloso para todos los esposos y padres y, como tal, puede ayudar a los hombres de nuestra diócesis a aceptar esta vocación y sus deberes esenciales con un renovado fervor y dedicación.
3. San José se destaca como ejemplo y modelo ejemplar para los sacerdotes y obispos, quienes, como San José, están encargados de velar por la familia de la Iglesia, de conducirla en la caridad y la verdad hacia la vida eterna. Así como en todos los tiempos, el Papa, los obispos y los sacerdotes de la Iglesia hoy necesitan un intercesor poderoso, como San José, para permanecer firmes en sus deberes pastorales como pastores y maestros.
4. Una de nuestras prioridades en la Diócesis de Wichita es renovar la vida parroquial y familiar. San José fue un verdadero hombre de familia que trabajó arduamente para proteger a la Sagrada Familia del peligro y para proveer lo necesario para Jesús y María, a pesar de la pobreza que experimentaron. La vida familiar está bajo esta amenaza. Podemos unirnos más íntimamente bajo el manto de María y su castísimo esposo, San José, para fortalecer la vida familiar aquí en nuestra iglesia local.
5. Siendo completamente judío, el sábado era de vital importancia para la Sagrada Familia. San José habría sido fundamental para impartir las tradiciones de la fe y la cultura judía a su hijo adoptivo, Jesús. Podemos mirar a San José y el ejemplo que dio al respecto para ayudarnos a reclamar el Sabbat cristiano, domingo, como el Día del Señor.
6. San José fue un hombre justo. Toda la gente, pero especialmente los hombres de nuestra cultura, necesitan un modelo a seguir para vivir vidas de justicia, valentía, pureza de corazón y cuerpo, compromiso y acompañamiento. En nuestra lucha contra la impureza, especialmente la provocada por la plaga de la pornografía, San José, el hombre casto y santo, puede ser un gran ejemplo de inspiración para todos de vivir vidas de pureza e inocencia regeneradas.
7. En este momento de incertidumbre, todos necesitamos más figuras paternas, especialmente en el ámbito espiritual. San José no huyó de sus responsabilidades como padre adoptivo y esposo, sino que las aceptó con confianza y valentía. Todos necesitamos hombres paternales en nuestras vidas, tanto natural como espiritualmente, para que nos guíen a través de estos tiempos oscuros y ansiosos.
8. El segundo nombre del padre Kapaun era José y, por todo lo que sabemos y conocemos de él, vivió una verdadera masculinidad y sacerdocio como los de José. Todos esperamos y rogamos para que el 2021 traiga buenas noticias en favor de su causa. Hasta entonces, sigamos siendo inspirados por su ejemplo y testimonio heroico en los momentos más difíciles. ¡Cómo San José debe haber inspirado a este granjero y sacerdote de Kansas!

Estas son algunas de las razones más importantes para invitarnos a reflexionar, orar por la intercesión de San José e invocarle en esta diócesis durante este año especial dedicado a él.

Algunos pueden cuestionar el tiempo de esta observancia espiritual dado que el tema de este año para la renovación en la evangelización, el discipulado y la stewarship es María, la primera discípula y su Fiat. No veo esto como un conflicto sino como una armonía. María, la primera discípula, puede verse adecuadamente junto a José como su esposo y protector, su compañero en su vocación dada por Dios. Sí, es verdad que María tenía su Fiat, pero también José.

Ambos cooperaron completamente con la voluntad de Dios. Creo que es de gran ayuda el verlos en su relación del uno por el otro. La estatua de ellos en nuestra Catedral no lleva a la reflexión sobre ellos y nos recuerda esta poderosa verdad. Justo detrás de la Santísima Virgen está el fuerte, justo y amoroso San José. También recordemos que tanto José como María están delante y detrás de nosotros en nuestros esfuerzos por evangelizar, vivir nuestro discipulado y ser buenos administradores de los dones que se nos han confiado, tal como fueron dados.

Le he pedido a un grupo de nuestra curia diocesana que me ayude a planificar este año. Más información y detalles estarán disponibles pronto. Entre las algunas maneras que esperamos promover la devoción a San José en este año especial se encuentran las siguientes: incluir artículos especiales en el Avance Católico sobre San José, invitar a rezar la consagración a San José de 33 días del padre Donald Calloway, rezar las Letanías de San José por las familias todos los días, consagrar la diócesis el 1 de enero de 2021 tanto a la Santísima Virgen María como a San José, animar a los fieles a hacer peregrinaciones sencillas y a ofrecer oraciones en las iglesias parroquiales dedicadas a San José, animar a todos a visitar, orar y reflexionar sobre las estatuas inspiradoras de José y María localizadas en la Catedral, invitar a cada familia a mostrar una imagen o estatua de San José en su hogar, proporcionar formación sobre San José en nuestras escuelas y programas de formación, invitar a nuestra gente a pedir por más vocaciones sacerdotales y a la vida consagrada, especialmente invitar a los jóvenes a considerar el discernimiento y la formación en la Casa de Formación San José, y animar a los sacerdotes a predicar sobre San José, especialmente en sus fiestas principales.

También le he pedido a la Santa Sede que pueda conceder, en las condiciones habituales, una indulgencia plenaria para este año especial. Cuando reciba noticias, les notificaré los detalles de esta indulgencia. Estas son solo algunas de las ideas en las que estamos trabajando para dar comienzo a este año especial de San José.

Deseo agradecerles de antemano por recibir amablemente mi invitación para celebrar el Año de San José. Que la intercesión de San José nos traiga numerosas e importantes gracias del Cielo, donde él vela por la Iglesia confiada a su cuidado patronal.
