Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Blessed Are You
Jer 17:5-8 / 1 Cor 15:12, 16-20 / Lk 6: 17, 20-26
Today’s Gospel introduces us to what are commonly understood as the beatitudes, or the Sermon on the Mount. When Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” one might just as easily substitute the word “happy” for “blessed”. Our lives are often spent in search of the next big thrill, achievement, or accomplishment, simply because we think it will bring us happiness. But Jesus shows us that happiness is not to be realized in the mere pursuit of pleasures like fine dining, entertainment, and admiration. Happiness is actually found in the little things of life, even when it involves suffering, if we first seek the Kingdom of God.
