Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Take the Risk
Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b/ Eph 5:21-32 / Jn 6:60-69
“Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, ‘This saying is hard: who can accept it?'” Isn’t it reassuring to know that even the first disciples were unsure of their own ability to be effective? They weren’t worried that people couldn’t understand what they were saying; they were worried that people wouldn’t accept what they were saying. And isn’t this what keeps many people from embracing their role as missionary disciples in today’s culture? They are afraid of persecution and judgment – and rightly so! While the world may have changed greatly in the last 2000 years, apparently people are still very much the same. Jesus and His disciples tolerated persecution from non-believers, and we must be willing to take that same risk!
