St. Irenaeus of Lyon completes SLC’s set

By Mike Cook

The Catholic Diocese of Wichita is honored to display icons of all 37 doctors of the Catholic Church. The collection, which is permanently housed at the Spiritual Life Center, is the only known collection of its kind.

The original collection of 33 icons of the doctors of the Catholic Church came to the diocese through the generous donation of Bob and Helen Bergkamp, who commissioned Ann Torrini of St. Louis, Missouri, to write these original icons on wood. It took her three years to complete the work.
Since the completion of the original 33 icons, recent popes have declared four new doctors of the Catholic Church.

These additional four icons were commissioned by the SLC directors and written by Wichita iconographer Mark Miller.

On Jan. 16, the SLC was blessed to accept the icon of St. Irenaeus of Lyon to complete the collection.

On your next retreat at the Spiritual Life Center, be sure to view the beauty of this amazing collection of the Doctors of the Catholic Church!

If you are interested in learning how to write icons, the SLC will host an icon writing retreat July 13-18. See www.slcwichita.org for further details.
