Increase your desire to be holy

St. Augustine: Reading the lives of the saints compelled him into action.

Dear Friends,

One of the best ways to fight impurity is to increase your desire to be holy.  “But being holy is boring!” You say.

Ahh, that old trick of the Devil.  If by boring you mean, you can go to sleep with a clean conscience; or can look yourself in the mirror or look at others and see them, not body parts; if boring is being in Heaven with friends and family, then give me boring!

If you increase your desire to be holy, your desire to be impure will lessen!

Seven Steps to Freedom:

  1. Eliminate the temptation.  There needs to be a period of abstinence before you can make progress.  This may mean unplugging from the internet!  Yes, there was life before the internet!
  2. Limit your access to the internet through:
    1. Time Limits
    2. Site Limits
    3. Accountability Partner
    4. Filters
    5. U-N-P-L-U-G it!!!  Really!
  3. Go to Confession on a weekly basis to the same confessor
  4. Don’t do it alone:  get help.  A spiritual director and perhaps professional help
  5. Pray always; Pray unceasingly
  6. Increase your desire to be holy
  7. Be wary of sinning against the virtue of hope through presumption or despair

Seven Steps to Freedom: Focus on Step Six:

“Increase  your desire to be holy.”

Saint Ignatius of Loyola loved to read.  So when he was recovering from a battle field wound he read.  Only two types of books were available:  romance novels and the lives of the saints.  He chose the romance novels first!

He loved reading them.  Afterwards through we felt depressed and sad.  There was no way he would ever live out what he read.  They only teased him. Loser!

Then he began to read about the saints.  Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Dominic, and Jesus.  After reading them he began to use his imagination and think about doing what the saints did.  He grew excited.  It was reality.  He really could drop everything and follow Jesus.  He really could fast, go on a pilgrimage, be a soldier for Christ.

The romance novels left him empty…fantasy, cotton candy, t.v. sitcoms.  Nice, but no meaning.

The lives of the saints compelled him into action…reality, meat and potatoes, real life!

Easy choice for Ignatius.  For more info go to:

"By Lust I mean that affection of the mind that aims at the enjoyment of one's self and one's neighbor without reference to God."~~St. Augustine

Movies and books-- videos on the internet can help.  When you read about a saint and what they went through, you want to be like them.  Did you know St. Francis, St. Benedict, and St. Augustine all were confronted with sins of impurity?  How did they deal with it?  Find out!  Watch out for thorns though!  Here are some good books and movies that might help you to want to become holy:

My Life with the Saints, James Martin

Padre Pio: Man of Hope, Renzo Allegri

Fatima for Today, Andrew Apostoli

Our Lady of Kibeho

Clare and Francis

Padre Pio: Miracle Man

St. John Bosco: Mission to Love

Our Lady of Kibeho: Mary Speaks to the World from the Heart of Africa

Even watching a video of Padre Pio celebrate Mass on youtube can help eliminate temptation, but do be careful on the net!  Don’t go there if you are vulnerable. Don’t let the Devil tease you into temptation and sinning!  It’s not worth it!

"More souls go to hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason."
