Seminars invite faithful to consider their plans with a Catholic view

For many, conversations about estate planning can easily be postponed. Few are eager to tackle a task often considered uncomfortable, intimidating, or perhaps meant for someone at a different stage of life than our own. Yet the Diocese of Wichita’s “Plan the Catholic Way” seminars invite parishioners to see the importance of end-of-life planning through a different lens: one rooted in stewardship, gratitude, and faith.

In February, 56 parishioners from across the diocese gathered at the Spiritual Life Center in Bel Aire for the most recent “Plan the Catholic Way” seminar. Hosted by the diocese’s Office of Development & Planned Giving, these informational sessions invite the diocesan faithful to consider several important topics that prepare individuals and families for the future with confidence and clarity. Topics covered include estate planning, Catholic teaching on end-of-life care and ethical decisions, resources and options related to senior care, guidance for funeral and cemetery planning, and legacy giving opportunities to support the diocese’s future.

Connor Meier, assistant director of development and planned giving for the diocese, notes that each subject directly or indirectly impacts everyone. “All of us – whether you are newly married, raising a young family, approaching retirement, or caring for a parent or spouse – will need to make important decisions about the future, and being informed in advance can make that process much easier,” he said. “At its core, estate planning really is a gift to your family and loved ones, so they know, understand, and ultimately carry out your wishes and desires. As Catholics, planning can also be an especially meaningful time to reflect on the many blessings God has entrusted to us.”

Beyond their personal relevance, the sessions aimed to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for guests to ask questions, share their experiences, and receive valuable resources from presenters and Catholic professionals.

St. Francis of Assisi parishioner Kyle Lang attended a recent seminar and expressed appreciation for the way the presentations addressed both practical planning and the importance of trusted guidance. “The entire day was very informative and enlightening in many ways,” he said. “It was encouraging to see so many participants taking an active role in planning for the future, while also recognizing how important it is to have sound guidance when navigating these complicated and sensitive decisions. I am grateful the diocese offers these types of events and opportunities to learn more.”

Whether a person is in the process of creating a will or trust, updating existing plans, or simply beginning to think about the future, the diocese encourages and welcomes all to attend. The next “Plan the Catholic Way” seminar will take place on Monday, April 27 at the Spiritual Life Center. It is free and open to all parishioners of the diocese.
