The Ongoing Formation Phase

"To reveal Jesus Christ and His Gospel to those who do not know them has been, ever since the morning of Pentecost, the fundamental program which the Church has taken on as received from her Founder." Pope Paul VI Evangelii Nuntiandi, 51

This is a time for ongoing formation of the Stewardship Council and parish.   This is also a good time to be intentional about reviewing and evaluating ministries.  Do the ministries support the parish mission and/or the Church’s mission (Matt 28:19-20)?  Ask the hard questions:  What do we need to stop doing?  What do we need to start doing?  What do we need to keep doing?

Thank, recognize, identify, develop and nurture leaders in your parish (Pillars of Formation and Hospitality):

  • Send leaders and council members to the Diocesan Stewardship Conference (April 2018), Parish Leadership Institute (July), leadership retreats and Renew Formation Conferences.
  • Commissioning service for Ministry/Council leadership.
  • Provide opportunities to build community among parish leaders.
  • Invite members of Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and School Council to join the Stewardship Council to study the book Divine Renovation by Fr. James Mallon (Pillars of Formation and Hospitality).

Provide opportunities for parishioners to discover giftedness (Pillar of Formation).  Resources can be found here:

  • Spiritual Gifts Inventory.
  • Discern Charisms (for resources see link above).
  • Living Your Strengths – Discovering Your God Given Talents and Inspire Your Community – Catholic Edition by Winseman, Clifton & Liesveld.
  • Continue to provide Ministry Leaders with new steward information as renewal forms are returned.

Study and reflect on these books and resources:

  • he Joy of the Gospel – Pope Francis
  • Forming Intentional Disciples – Sherry Weddell
  • Living as Missionary Disciples – USCCB
  • Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples – Sherry Weddell
  • Implement discipleship opportunities/programs (ex:  Christ Life, Alpha in the Catholic Context, Christ Renews His Parish, Be My Witness etc.).

The four pillars of Hospitality, Prayer, Formation, and Service invite parishioners to experience, witness, and live the stewardship way of life in response to their baptismal call to discipleship.

Consider organizing ministries by pillar on your website, in your bulletin, ministry guides, etc.

On the next few pages are some ideas and/or best practices to consider as you work to make the Stewardship Way of Life message a year-round focus.
