Sister Henrita VanLeeuwen dies June 8



Congregation of St. Joseph Sister Henrita VanLeeuwen died June 8. She was 84. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 10.
Born March 20, 1925, and baptized Leona Isabelle, she entered the Congregation of St. Joseph on March 19, 1944, and received the name Sister Henrita. The native of St. Paul, she was proud of coming to religious life from St. Francis Parish, the “oldest established church on this side of the Mississippi.”
Sister Henrita served as a housekeeper at the convents in Kingman, Florence and Hutchinson. From 1949 to 1984, She taught in Catholic elementary schools Dodge City, Hoisington, Pittsburg, Frontenac, Hutchinson, Chanute, Kansas City, Parsons, Pittsburg and Wichita, and Hayward, Calif.
Sister Henrita was teaching at Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Dodge City, at the time their diocese was formed. “Those were great days!” she said. From 1985 to 1999 Sister ministered as a tutor and lunchroom supervisor at St. Patrick Catholic School in Wichita. For the past 10 years she has lived in retirement in Marian Hall at the Wichita Center of the Congregation of St. Joseph.
In addition to the members of her religious community Sister Henrita is survived by her sisters Lois Drescher and Lorene Klein, Wichita, and Sister Joan VanLeeuwen, Littleton, Colo., her brothers Max, Wichita, and Charles, St. Paul, her sister-in-law Isabel, Dayton.

Monsignor Pat Leahy dies April 30 at 94

Monsignor Patrick Joseph “Pat” Leahy, 94, a retired priest of the Diocese of Dodge City and a former priest of the Diocese of Wichita, died April 30, at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the St. Elizabeth Chapel at the Catholic Care Center with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore presiding. Burial was in Ascension Cemetery.

Sister Marcella Marie Winkels dies April 25

Sister Marcella Marie Winkels died on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She was born on April 6, 1930, and was one of 15 children of William and Barbara Winkels. Sister Marcella Marie had eight brothers and is survived by six. She had seven sisters and is survived by four. Sister grew up on the family farm in Adams, Minnesota.
Sister Marcella Marie entered the Community of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 28, 1950. She had been in nurse’s training when she entered but upon completing her novitiate she was assigned to teach, much to her disappointment.

Monsignor Pat Leahy dies April 30 at 94

Monsignor Patrick Joseph “Pat” Leahy, 94, a retired priest of the Diocese of Dodge City, died April 30, at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita.
A vigil for Msgr. Leahy will be at 7 p.m. Monday, May 4, at the St. Elizabeth Chapel, Catholic Care Center, 6700 E. 45th Street N., Wichita. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5 in the St. Elizabeth Chapel with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore presiding. Burial will be in Ascension Cemetery.

Sister Ida Martin dies on Easter
Sister Ida Martin died on Easter Sunday, April 12. Her wake service was held on Wednesday, April 15, and the Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her on Thursday, April 16. She is buried in the Mount St. Mary Convent Cemetery in Wichita.
Ida Cornelia Martin was born May 11, 1915 in Haviland. On Sept. 6, 1931, Ida came to Mount St. Mary Convent. Six months later, on March 19, 1932 she was received into the novitiate and given the name Sister Mary Clarence.
Ida’s ministry as an educator began in 1934 at St. Francis School in St. Paul. For the next 20 years she taught at St. Mary, Pittsburg, Blessed Sacrament, Wichita, Sacred Heart, Arkansas City, where she served as principal, St. Patrick, Parsons. Sister taught junior high students at Holy Name, Coffeyville, and Immaculate Conception, Claflin.
After earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree, she taught high school home economics at St. Patrick High School, Parsons, St. Paul High School, St. Paul, and St. Teresa High School in Hutchinson. She also taught at McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City.
