Father Philip Mangan

Father Mangan was born on June 10, 1886 in Cherryvale, KS where he also attended grade school. His high school studies were at St. Benedict’s College and then he attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL. Following his theological training at Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO; he was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita on May 25, 1924 in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Kansas City, MO by Bishop Thomas Lillis. He was the first vocation to the priesthood from Cherryvale. During his 28 years in the diocese he served at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sacred Heart Parish in Caney, St. Patrick’s Parish in Parsons, and St. John’s Hospital in Iola. Due to illness, he spent the last five and one-half years of his life helping in various parishes as his health allowed. He died at Mercy Hospital in Independence, KS on December 29, 1952 at the age of 66. His Requiem Mass was celebrated in his home parish of St. Francis Xavier, Cherryvale.
