Outreach & Reaching Out--Still a Good Idea

Guadalupe Clinic began reaching out 33 years ago as an all volunteer nurse-run health station offering screenings such as blood pressure, blood sugars, and weight.  Today our dedicated volunteer medical professionals and the organizations that support us through donating goods and services make it possible to provide primary and specialty healthcare to thousands every year.  To stay in touch with our roots and the ever-changing needs of the community we serve, clinic volunteers and staff consistently participate in outreach events throughout the year.

Events include a breakfast held on the first Saturday of every month and hosted by First Presbyterian church. In addition to health checks and screenings, clinic staff also learn about the needs of the people by listening to their individual life stories.  Another monthly event is Church On the Street. Reaching out to the homeless, KU School of Medicine “JayDocs” provide health screenings, and they along with Guadalupe Clinic hand out hygiene products. During the summer these packs include sunscreen, bandages, and hand sanitizer. For the winter months socks, lotion and chapstick are provided.  The clinic receives many generous donations of blankets and throws and these are packaged and given out, also.

Other ways we reach out on a regular basis include conducting health screenings at St. Peter Claver, the Asian Wellness Fair, the winter men’s shelter at Interfaith Ministries, and La Familia. Our participation in Ascension’s Medical Mission at Home focuses on women’s health which is recognized as a component critical to the overall well-being of family units.

Guadalupe Clinic staff, volunteers and donors are thankful to have the opportunity reach out and serve those less fortunate and contribute to a better future for them and the entire Wichita community.

Our History

In 1985, six volunteer nurses decided to change the face of medicine in Wichita.  They wanted quality affordable health care made available to everyone, regardless of income.  They founded Guadalupe Health Station, which later was renamed Guadalupe Clinic.  Now some 32 years later, there are three clinics and volunteers and staff also provide outreach services at various locations around Wichita.  Guadalupe Clinic has been a donation-based clinic since its inception in 1985. Patients are asked for a $5 donation and receive a doctor's care, lab tests, x-rays, and medication for that donation. No one is ever turned away due to an inability to donate.   Medical volunteers along with staff provide thousands of medical services each year to those in our community with no insurance or other affordable means to health care services.

These are the many companies and foundations that have provided Guadalupe Clinic with needed funding through grant opportunities. We are humbled and grateful for their belief in our mission and for all of their generous support.
