Feast of the Holy Family

Veneration of the Holy Family formally began in the 17th century. The purpose of the feast is to present the Holy Family as a model for all Christian families. This feast is celebrated on the Sunday between Christmas, on December 25th, and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1st. In 1921 it was placed on the General Liturgical Calendar to be observed by the universal Church.

Activities on the Feast

o  St. Joseph lead his family in prayer at home in Nazareth. Following his example, celebrate a Blessing of the Family orHousehold sometime during the day. Use on other days throughout the year, too,

o  As a family reflect on what it means to be a Catholic family and how to make your family more holy.

o  Plan a special outing or other activity to do together (e.g. make popcorn balls).

o  Have everyone in the family plan one part of, or pick out one thing for, the meal for the feast of the Holy Family on December27th.
