Who is Blessed Fr. Stanley Rother?

Ordained in 1963 as a priest of Oklahoma, Fr. Rother went as a missionary to the Oklahoma Mission in Guatemala in 1968. Serving the people of the village of Santiago, Atitlan faithfully, he was murdered in his rectory in 1981 by gunmen aligned with the Guatemalan Army. From the day of his death his example of service and perseverance was recognized as extraordinary by the people of his parish and by the Catholics of Oklahoma. In 2006 his case for sainthood was initiated by the Archdiocese at the Vatican. He was Beatified in 2017 as the first martyr for the faith in both Guatemala and in the United States.

In our days of retreat together, we will have the opportunity to explore the journey of Fr. Rother as he responded to God’s invitation to be faithful to his vocation and offer his life in service. We will explore how our lives are the places where God will become present to the challenges and suffering of our time.

Most of us will not be given the mission of pastoral service in Guatemala. God willing, none of us will be required to lay down our lives as witnesses to the faith in the face of murderous circumstances. And the majority of us are not invited to thread our way through life and death decisions to minister to the people in our care.

However, all of us are asked to be faithful.

How are you being called in your life?
