Catholic school enrollment in Wichita area, Kapaun Mt. Carmel numbers set records
WICHITA – Enrollment in Sedgwick County Catholic schools increased this fall from 8,005 to 8,052 students. There are 18 elementary and two secondary Catholic schools in Sedgwick County including St. Mary’s in Derby, St. Cecilia in Haysville, Holy Spirit in Goddard, and Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Bishop Carroll Catholic high schools.
Kapaun Mt. Carmel reached a milestone this year by enrolling 918 students, a record for Wichita’s east side Catholic high school. In addition, Catholic schools now educate a record number of minority students with a 10 percent increase among Hispanic, Asian, and African American students. There was also a 15.4 percent increase in students qualifying for free and reduced hot lunches.
While enrollment increased in Sedgwick County Catholic schools, there was a slight decrease in the overall diocesan Catholic school enrollment. Enrollment for all 38 Catholic schools this year was 10,807, 25 fewer than last year’s number of 10,832.
Bob Voboril, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Wichita said enrollment dipped slightly due to small declines in about two-thirds of the schools in the diocese.
“It is heartening to see our newest school, Holy Spirit, continuing to grow, and to see enrollment increases year after year,” he said.
Voboril is encouraged to see priests and principals try to serve so many families who are struggling because of the recession. He said he was also encouraged by the number of Catholic school alumni who are studying for a vocation in religious life.
“Ultimately I want nothing more than for all children to learn about Jesus and to live their life like he did and this is the mission of our Catholic schools,” he said.
