Support for Catholic Schools, Inc. (SCS) was created as a result of the 2015 Kansas legislative session in which a previously passed law was modified with language that allowed the Diocese of Wichita to establish a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO).
SCS is a supporting ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and will, once operational, accept charitable contributions from certain kind of companies, most notable a C corporations. In return for a contribution, these companies will be provided with a Kansas tax credit of 70% to be applied to their Kansas State tax liability.
Contributors eligible to make contributions to SCS include C Corporations filing a corporate income tax return pursuant to the Kansas income tax act, and amendments thereto, taxpayers filing a privilege tax return pursuant to K.S.A. 79-1105c et seq., and amendments thereto and companies filing an insurance premium tax statement pursuant to K.S.A. 40-252, and amendments thereto.
SCS then distributes these funds to Catholic schools in the Diocese that have eligible students who qualify as an at-risk pupil and either attends a school that would qualify as either a Title I Focus School or a Title I Priority School or received an educational scholarship under this program and has not graduated from high school or reached 21 years of age. At risk pupils are defined as those eligible for free lunch under the National School Lunch Act.
How does participation in this fund impact my responsibility to be a good steward at my parish?
Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God’s gifts and shares them in love of God and neighbor. What is expected of Catholic school families in way of active stewardship is expected of all families in the parish. What is expected of all families is:
Because a family qualifies for a grant in no way negates ones obligation to live an active practice of the faith as outlined above.
Does participation in this fund change the foundational way in which our parish school is funded?
Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wichita are funded through a combination of three ways:
What is the difference between SCS and the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School Fund?
The St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School Fund is a fund of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and assists parishes that struggle financially to provide a Catholic school education to their parishioners. The flow of money provided by generous donors is to the parish to assist in paying for Catholic school education. There are specific criteria a parish must meet to participate in this program. Donors to the Drexel Fund receive a charitable contribution receipt they can use, if applicable, against their state and federal taxes.
Support for Catholic Schools. Inc. is a separately incorporated ministry of the Diocese and provides assistance to any Catholic school in the Diocese where a student attends who meets the eligibility criteria set by the State of Kansas. Donors to the SCS, Inc. as defined by state of Kansa law can receive a 70% charitable tax credit for their gift.
