By Bonnie Toombs, Director of Respect Life and Social Justice
Holy Savior Parish in Wichita was busy with pro-life activities during October. Parishioners were asked to promote awareness and discussion on the issue of capital punishment.
Their pastor, Father James Billinger, spoke at Masses about Catholic teachings on the issue of the capital punishment, stating that it was time for thoughtful men and women to come together and discuss the Kansas Death Penalty.

By Christopher M. Riggs
Ben Green is getting two big gifts in December. Not only will he be ordained to the transitional diaconate, he will be ordained in his home parish.
Green, a seminarian studying at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md., will be ordained on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Holy Cross Church in Hutchinson. Ordinations are usually held in the mother church of the diocese, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita, but because the Cathedral is in the process of renovation, he will be ordained at his home parish.
“My bishop, vocation director, and the people of the diocese have been very patient with me as I discerned my vocation, it will be good to give back,” Green wrote via an email message from the Mount.
The seminarian, the son of John and Catherine Green, said being ordained at Holy Cross brings his life into a full circle. “My parish was where I first felt my call to the priesthood and the people have been tremendous in supporting me. I am very happy that my bishop is willing to ordain me there.”

The relics in the altar at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita were removed Wednesday, Nov. 2, as part of the renovation work at the mother church of the Diocese of Wichita.

Also included in the niche that held the relics was a watch and an envelope, that may have held the watch, with the name of Father Paul Alderman on it. There is no explanation regarding the inclusion of the watch with the relics.

Workers in the last few weeks have removed the Cathedral’s pews, which will be refurbished by a Nebraska company. The pews will be reinstalled after all the other work in the church is complete – in about a year. The stained glass windows have also been covered from the inside to protect them as work progresses. The organ and several pipes have also been removed for refurbishing and storage.
