Renovations are complete at the St. Paul Parish and Newman Center at Wichita State University. The seven-month Renaissance Project began on July 9.
The renovations were completed on Jan. 25, the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, said Father John Hay, pastor. “One of the beautiful realities that communicates is that while the physical building underwent a conversion of sorts, the reason the building exists in the first place is to help us realize an interior conversion of mind and heart that must always go on.”
Bishop Michael O. Jackels celebrated the solemn Mass of dedication of the new altar and blessing of the renovated facility on Friday, Jan. 25. Students, alumni, and priests from the diocese filled the sanctuary for the celebration.

MCPHERSON -- Every week day, dozens of students, teachers, faculty and parents walk in and out of the commons area at St. Joseph Catholic School.
But many have slowed their commute through since Sunday, when a new colorful mural was hung on the beige walls. The work fuses both art and religion with the talent of students, a goal Principal Peggy Bahr had hoped would further the vision of the school.
“We’re a Catholic school, and I want people when they come in the door to know by the look and the feel of it that it’s a Catholic school first and foremost,” Bahr said. “I felt like this kind of does that for us.”
About 10 sixth-graders from St. Joseph spent nine weeks this fall learning from and painting with Naomi Ullum, professor of art at Central Christian College.

Blessed Sacrament Society of St. Vincent de Paul starts food program
The Blessed Sacrament Society of St. Vincent de Paul started a weekend food program at Blessed Sacrament School in December for children who would benefit from extra food over weekends or on extended schools breaks.
SVdP member Gina Adams is leading the effort with the help of Blessed Sacrament School administrators, teachers, clergy, and members of the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference.
A similar public school program sends a back-pack of kid friendly snacks home with qualifying public school children every weekend during the school year. When researching options, Adams learned that students at private schools could not benefit from the public school program and decided to come up with a similar program to benefit the Blessed Sacrament School kids.

Catholic Charities, a diocesan ministry, will offer a series of healthy marriage and relationship workshops for individuals and couples beginning Jan. 22 in Pittsburg.
The workshops, “Within My Reach” and “Within Our Reach,” are available through the Marriage for Keeps program, designed to strengthen the romantic relationships and marriages of Kansans.
“Our relationship education and marriage enrichment workshops aim to positively change the lives of all participants,” said Melissa Grelinger, Catholic Charities’ interim executive director.
“Pittsburg area individuals and couples who join these sessions will learn concrete steps to enrich their relationships. For example, spending more one-on-one time with one another as a couple to strengthen bonds, working together to improve family and financial stability, and learning healthy methods to resolve conflict are actions that will improve any couple’s relationship.”

St. Patrick’s featuring performers from throughout the diocese
By Molly Martin
St. Patrick Parish in Chanute is commemorating the Year of Faith by hosting a series of music concerts throughout the year. The Year of Faith, which began Oct. 11, marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council.
Sherri Watson, music minister at the parish, said, “The Holy Father proclaimed this Year of Faith to be ‘...a moment of grace and commitment to a more complete conversion to God, to strengthen our faith in Him and proclaim Him with joy to the people of our time.’”
The pastor, Father Bernie Gorges, and Sallie Knapp, music director for the parish, felt that because the parish and community had a wealth of talent and love of music, the music series would be an ideal way to “proclaim Him with joy” and bring our entire community together in praise.”
