2011 Parish Stewardship Renewal – "Follow-Phase" 2011
The “Call to Commitment Phase” of the annual parish / diocesan stewardship renewal process culminated on Stewardship Commitment Sunday (weekend of November 19/20, 2011. During the “Call to Commitment Phase” parishioners were listening to homilies and witness presentations encouraging and inviting them to prayerfully recognize, receive and accept their God given gifts and then to commit generously, sacrificially and proportionately in the process of sharing their giftedness by completing and returning their annual time, talent and treasure commitment forms.
Accordingly, as of Monday, November 21, 2011 we enter the third and very important “Follow-up Phase” of the annual renewal process. The timely and prompt facilitation of the follow-up phase is very important and equally necessary in the overall success and growth of stewardship formation and the practice thereof within the parish community.
Parishioners need and should expect to receive prompt and timely acknowledgement and thanks for their volunteer commitments of time and talent as well as for their gifts of treasure. Parishioners will and should also be expecting the prompt direct and personal invitation and opportunity to share of their commitments of time, talent and treasure in service to the overall mission of their parish.
Although very important, the personal thank you and the use of those volunteering to give of their time and talent are the most neglected aspects of the stewardship follow-up process at the parish level. Experience within the diocese as well as national research beyond our diocesan boundaries confirms that the failure or lack of timely follow-up with those who have completed commitment forms will significantly impact the success and long-term image of stewardship image / perception of stewardship in the parish community.
Promptly following Call to Commitment Sunday, November 21 the parish stewardship council, parish pastoral council and parish finance council should under the direction of the pastor have a plan in place to formally acknowledge, thank and invite parishioners to become involved while also compiling, recording and tracking, over time, the results / trends of each stewardship renewal.

Sharing God's gifts in love of God and neighbor is the life-giving spirit to a steward.
Our poster this year depicts this life-giving action: the procession from the Mass to go and share God's gifts, in love of God and neighbor. A necessary and natural response to what has occurred at the Holy Eucharist.

The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
When we consider the gifts God gives us, we don’t often consider work to be one of them. In today’s readings both Job and St. Paul speak of toil and labor. Job looks at the life of man as drudgery since there is work to do each day. St. Paul explains how he must work because God gave him a job to do. The gospel message is similar in that Jesus wants to visit all the nearby villages to preach and heal the sick. Since the kingdom of God had come to earth it was important to share that message with everyone. Help us O Lord, to recognize our duty to share the gospel with our neighbor.

The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In Moses’ time the importance of protecting good health was apparent, especially in the rules that were put in place concerning leprosy. Infected persons were to separate themselves from the community and warn others to not approach them. Jesus brings a new outlook and teaches that compassion and care are more important and heals those with leprosy and other illnesses. The Mosaic laws concerning leprosy were for the good of the community but Jesus’ message was for the good of the individual. May we be open to God’s mercy to heal and cleanse the pain in our lives.

The Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
The sacrament of Penance is a sacrament of healing. Through Isaiah God revealed that though He chose the nation of Israel to be His own, Israel kept sinning and turning from Him. God’s message is that he will wipe out the offenses and remember them no more. In the gospel Jesus, too, chooses to forgive sins when he is given the opportunity. When Jesus heals the body of the paralytic, he also heals his soul by forgiving his sins. As we pray each time we sat the Lord’s Prayer, may we be forgiven in the same way we forgive others.

The First Sunday of Lent
Lent is a time of preparation. We begin this year with the story of God’s covenant with Noah after the flood. God promised to never again destroy all living creatures with a flood. The Letter of St. Peter reminds us that Christ, the righteous, suffered for us, the unrighteous. Jesus brought the message that the kingdom of God had come and the people should repent and believe. May we, during this season of Lent, repent of our lack of faith that we may be welcomed into the kingdom of God.
