Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God's gifts and shares these gifts in love of God and neighbor.

Ongoing Formation Period for Parish Stewardship Council Members

Thursday, 15 March 2012 10:03

After the success of the Diocesan Stewardship Conference, it’s time to begin planning for the parish renewal process.

Under the direction of the parish pastor, the primary responsibility of the parish stewardship council is to assist the pastor in forming parishioners to be Christian stewards.

In order to effectively fulfill the role and duties entailed in serving as a parish stewardship council, those selected to serve must, on an ongoing basis, be formed in the spirituality of stewardship witnessing to such in their own Christian way of life and actively involved in the process of forming Christian stewards within their parish community.

There are three distinct phases of the annual stewardship renewal calendar, the Preparation Phase, the Call to Commitment Phase and the Follow-Up Phase, all encompassing a 9-month period of time from June through February.

Importantly as well is the three month Ongoing Formation Period specifically for parish stewardship council members during the months of March, April and May 2012 (Refer to Annual Renewal Calendar under “Services & Resources” menu page).

This important three-month Ongoing Formation Period is a time for intense and ongoing formation for parish stewardship council members.  It is also an opportune time for the parish stewardship council to discern, plan and develop the steps it will take in continuing the ongoing formation of all members of the parish in the spirituality of stewardship.

Suggested activities during this three-month formation period might include:

Sharing God's gifts in love of God and neighbor is the life-giving spirit to a steward.

Our poster this year depicts this life-giving action: the procession from the Mass to go and share God's gifts, in love of God and neighbor.  A necessary and natural response to what has occurred at the Holy Eucharist.

The Fifth Sunday of Easter

To focus the efforts of employees or volunteers a company or organization will develop a mission statement.  A mission statement is a concise explanation of the predominant goals and overall attitude of an organization.  Today’s readings give us a glimpse of how the early church served and why.  The reading from St John tells us that we must rely on our faith in God and continually attempt to keep His commandments.  The gospel relates how Jesus taught the Apostles that to be fruitful they must remain in Him and keep his commandments.  As the early church spread through the sharing of Jesus’ teachings, may we also deepen our faith through studying the Word of God.

The Sixth Sunday of Easter

God is love.  We hear this in the letter of John and may wonder at its meaning.  Jesus himself explains the extent of his love in today’s gospel: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  There is no greater love than this.  Jesus wanted his disciples to love one another as he loved them.  In many ways we are called to live our lives for one another, sharing the love that God has for us, demonstrated to us by his Son’s death on a cross.  May our faith allow us to experience the love of the Father and share that love in our world.

The Seventh Sunday of Easter

Before Jesus’ Ascension he prayed to his Father to protect his disciples from the evil one.  This prayer served to warn his disciples and us today that Satan is always working against heaven and that we must put our trust and faith in God for protection.  Jesus called himself the way, the truth and the life.  Our reliance on Jesus means that we cling to truth, defending it and sharing it with our neighbors.   Jesus rose from the dead, breaking the bonds of Satan and opening the gate to Heaven.  May we recognize the truth and keep it in our hearts.

Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday is the day we commemorate the Holy Spirit coming to the Apostles.  Jesus prepared the disciples for the Spirit’s coming, as retold in today’s gospel.  As the Apostles were strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we too are given gifts to enable us to fulfill God’s will in our world.  St Paul tells us clearly that each of us has a role in the Church to further God’s kingdom and the Holy Spirit supplies what we need to fulfill that role.  May we use our gifts to serve God and neighbor.
