Sr. Nora Phelan, a sister of the Congregation of St. Joseph, died Jan. 16.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Sr. Nora on Jan. 19 at the Wichita Center of the Congregation of St. Joseph, followed by interment in the convent cemetery.
She was born in Pittsburg on Oct. 27, 1945. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University, and master’s and doctoral degrees from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.
Sister Nora served as an elementary school teacher at St. Patrick Catholic School, Kingman, and Holy Savior Catholic School, Wichita.
She was director of medical records, Blackwell General Hospital, Blackwell, Okla; director of Mission Effectiveness, St. Rose Hospital, Hayward, Calif.; chaplain and vice-president for Mission Services, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Ponca City, Okla.; director of ethics, Via Christi Health System, Wichita; and chaplain, Via Christi Regional Network, Wichita.
Sister Nora also served on the board of trustees of Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg, Westminster Village, Ponca City, Okla., and the Center for Health and Wellness, Wichita.
Sister Nora was preceded in death by her father, George R. Phelan, Jr. Sister Nora is survived by her mother, Hope Phelan, her sister Hope Johnson, and her brothers George R. III, John and Richard, all of Miami, Fla., and nieces and nephews.
