The Power of Partnerships

As many of our supporters know, Guadalupe Clinic began as a neighborhood health screening station. Volunteer nurses came together to offer their services to those in our community with no viable healthcare options. Over the last 32 years the Clinic has changed and grown and expanded to include general practitioners, in-house specialty doctors, services and testing. Guadalupe is still a volunteer-driven organization. This is all possible due to medical professionals donating their time and talent, local companies donating specialty services, testing and supplies, and partnerships with universities and organizations all working to improve the health of the less fortunate—our patients.

For example, 13 years ago Guadalupe Clinic entered into a partnership with the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita JayDocs (medical school and later added pharmacy students). This made it possible to open on Saturdays and expand our clinic hours. Since then a monthly diabetic clinic and a Thursday night outreach clinic, both through partnerships with KUSM-W, have been added. Through this partnership the JayDocs receive hands-on practice with patients experiencing a wide variety of health problems. Up to eight medical students, their precept (the attending physician signing off on each patient’s treatment) and two Guadalupe support personnel operate the Clinic.

The students are with the patient from the in-take process (vital signs such as blood pressure, weight, medications and family history are recorded) through the medical examination. They confer with the attending physician and discuss the symptoms, final diagnosis and treatment options.  Offering health and nutrition information and education is an important part of the learning process for both the medical students and their patients—developing a partnership with the patients. When patients are better informed about their own medical conditions they will be more comfortable, confident and empowered to take greater responsibility for their personal health and wellness.

Our History

In 1985, six volunteer nurses decided to change the face of medicine in Wichita.  They wanted quality affordable health care made available to everyone, regardless of income.  They founded Guadalupe Health Station, which later was renamed Guadalupe Clinic.  Now some 32 years later, there are three clinics and volunteers and staff also provide outreach services at various locations around Wichita.  Guadalupe Clinic has been a donation-based clinic since its inception in 1985. Patients are asked for a $5 donation and receive a doctor's care, lab tests, x-rays, and medication for that donation. No one is ever turned away due to an inability to donate.   Medical volunteers along with staff provide thousands of medical services each year to those in our community with no insurance or other affordable means to health care services.

These are the many companies and foundations that have provided Guadalupe Clinic with needed funding through grant opportunities. We are humbled and grateful for their belief in our mission and for all of their generous support.
