The Diocese once again plans to lead a pilgrimage to World Youth Day! Official Dates for WYD Panama are January 20-29, 2019. Complete the form below to receive updates for our pilgrimage!
WYD 2019 will cost $3,500 per pilgrim which includes airfare, 4-star hotel accommodations, World Youth Day registration and most meals. In addition to World Day Festivities we will visit the Panama Canal, Biodiversity Museum, El Valle de Anton (town in a volcano) and Chorro de Macho Cascade (waterfall). We will travel with Catholic Pilgrim Office and enjoy the following itinerary:
Day 1: January 20, SUN: (Subject to change with airline): NORTH AMERICA/Central America. Depart North America. Your flight includes meal and or snack, drinks, and in-flight entertainment. **Most groups will arrive the same day as the departure date-in some cases groups may not arrive until the following day depending on your region*** Upon arrival in Panama, we will be met by the tour escort at the airport. Continue to the hotel. (Meals per WYD Council)
Day 2: January 21, MON: WYD WEEK - PANAMA CITY & CANAL LOCKS: We begin as our guide describes the engineering wonder of the Panama Canal locks that enable efficient passage between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, en route to the Miraflores Locks, the first stop on your full-day tour. On arrival, witness ships being raised and lowered between sea level and Miraflores Lake,. Then enjoy interactive displays at the Miraflores Visitors Center. Next up is Ancón Hill (Cerro Ancón), a 650-foot (200-meter) viewpoint that overlooks Panama City. After lunch (on our own) you'll head to the Smithsonian-operated Punta Culebra Nature Center on Naos Island. Back in Panama City, you’re driven to the 17th-century colonial neighborhood of Casco Viejo (‘Old Quarter’) for a guided walking tour through the World Heritage–listed district. Day 3: January 22, TUE: WYD WEEK - BIODIVERSITY MUSEUM: A natural history museum designed by famed architect Frank Gehry - The building was designed to tell the story of how the isthmus of Panama rose from the sea, uniting two continents, separating a vast ocean in two, and changing the planet’s biodiversity forever. Tonight we attend the opening ceremony for WYD 2016. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 4: January 23, WED: WYD - Panama. (Optional Morning Day Tour-May conflict with WYD activities) Attend the WYD festival events in the afternoon and evening. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 5: January 24, THU: WYD - Panama. WYD Activities. Arrival and welcome of the Holy Father in the afternoon and evening. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 6: January 25, FRI: WYD - Panama. WYD activities. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 7: January 26, SAT: WYD - Panama. Pilgrimage walk to site of Closing Mass, evening Vigil with the Holy Father and sleep out 'under the stars'. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 8: January 27, SUN: WYD - Panama. Closing Mass and concluding events. (Meals per WYD Council-Breakfast included for hotel pilgrims)
Day 9: January 28, MON: - Panama—El Valle de Anton. This morning we drive to the El Valle de Anton, the world’s only town, city or village built within and surrounded by the intact walls [caldera] of a volcano. It has only 3,000 full-time residents who actually live inside the caldera of the El Valle Volcano. It is the world’s second largest intact and un-flooded singular volcanic caldera surpassed only by the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania, Africa. El Valle also has the distinction of being the earth’s oldest continually occupied volcanic site with a history that reaches back at least 10,000 years. Visit the Chorro de Macho Cascade, a lovely waterfall standing 115 feet high over a natural whirlpool.
Day 10: January 29, TUE: WYD WEEK Panama—TRANSFER TO AIRPORT. This morning, we transfer to the airport for our departure. (Breakfast at hotel if applicable)
