Msgr. McGread and Sr. Diane Leary honored at Newman commencement
WICHITA – Congregation of St. Joseph Sister Diane Leary and Monsignor Thomas McGread, a priest of the Diocese of Wichita, were honored Dec. 15 at the Newman University Fall 2012 commencement ceremony.
Sister Diane was honored for her example of the Newman Core Value of Academic Excellence. Monsignor McGread was honored for his example of the Newman Core Value of Catholic Identity.
NU’s commencement was held at Central Community Church. A total of 178 candidates for degrees were honored in the ceremony, including 37 candidates for associate’s degrees, 99 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, and 42 candidates for master’s degrees.
The commencement ceremony included an address by Newman University Associate Professor of Biology Michael Bradley, Ph.D. Bradley received the 2012 Newman University Teaching Excellence Award, an annual recognition to a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated an innovative or dynamic approach to courses, course revisions, and teaching techniques.
The ceremony also included the bestowal of Doctor of Humane Letters degrees upon two notable and accomplished members of the extended Newman community.
The honorary degrees are awarded each fall and spring commencement to individuals whose life and work reflect exemplary dedication to one of the university’s four core values: Catholic Identity, Culture of Service, Academic Excellence, and Global Perspective.
Newman University senior project to benefit pregnancy crisis center
WICHITA – Newman University senior Miranda Kohls of Clearwater is organizing a January event to benefit A Better Choice Pregnancy Crisis Center in Wichita.
Chilin’ For Life - A Better Choice event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Newman University Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
“I am hoping to help others better understand mothers in crisis pregnancy situations and to facilitate a way for them to become involved in community pro-life activities,” said Kohls.
Cost to attend Chilin’ For Life - A Better Choice is $10 for adults and $5 for students. For those donating an item from the Nonfinancial Ways of Giving examples found at the bottom of http://pregnancywichita.com/waystogive, prices are reduced to $5 for adults and admission-free for students.
