Catholic youth of Region 3 have developed a music ministry over the past two years that is growing in popularity.
Youth of the region, made up of teens from Andale, Colwich, St. Marks, Garden Plain, Goddard, Mt. Vernon, Danville, Kingman, Harper, Anthony, Willowdale, and Zenda, sing at one Mass a month at the various churches in their region.
Gil Bergkamp, the region’s coordinator, said “It is quite amazing to watch the kids sing praise and worship at the Mass. The response from the parishioners is always that the youth give them hope in their faith and the Catholic Church.”
He added that the idea was from the late Fr. David Linnebur. When he was pastor at Garden Plain he sent youth from Region 3 to Franciscan University of Steubenville Youth Conferences and urged youth to always pray when they gathered – whether they met for sports or for dances.
“We did that at Garden Plain,” Bergkamp said, “and as I moved into the regional role, we brought this to the regional level. Now the region goes to the Franciscan University conferences each summer and they take that energy of adoration, praise, worship, Eucharist, and penance that the conference stresses.”
