Worship Office series to help laity with revised Roman Missal continues

The diocesan Office of Worship’s series “Catechesis on the Mass” continues at three Wichita parishes.
The series is designed to help the laity get ready for the revised English translation of the Roman Missal.
Fr. Mike Nolan, director of the diocesan Office of Worship, said the new translation is still some time away but diocesan worship offices have been asked to begin sharing information about the upcoming changes in the Mass.
The Roman Missal is the ritual text for the celebration of the Mass. The first workshop in the series is called “Revisiting the Roman Rite” in which participants will review some theological principles of the “General Instruction to the Roman Missal” (the how-to of Mass), the translation principles used in revising the English-language missal, and a few examples of the Ordinary of the Mass, such as the Creed and Gloria, which generally are invariable, and which Rome has already approved.
This first workshops are being offered in the Wichita area. This same workshop will be offered later this winter and in the spring in other areas of the diocese. Dates, locations, and times will be published in the Advance.
The Missale Romanum (the Roman Missal) is the ritual text for the celebration of the Mass. It was first promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as the definitive text of the reformed liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. A second edition followed in 1975.
The revised English translation of the Roman Missal is now in Rome. Typically, the Vatican has taken as long as two years to review texts. Hence approval of the revised English-language missal could come this year or next. Then a period of at least a year would be necessary for publishers to ready their materials.
