Diocesan news

Gerber Institute discussion held at Newman U. — Father James Billinger, pastor of Holy Savior Parish, Wichita, Kristi Smith, and Sister Therese Bangert, listen to fellow panelist Sue Norton at a Jan. 26 discussion hosted by the Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University. About 80 people attended the discussion about “Reconciliation and the Death Penalty: What is the Way Forward?” Those attending heard about the history of the death penalty in Kansas, the current legislative initiative to abolish it, and the Catholic Church’s stance on capital punishment. Norton and Smith, both members of the national organization Murder Victims’ Families for Reconciliation, offered their perspectives as individuals who have lost family members to murder yet oppose the death penalty.
