Stephanie Mann gave Father Mitch Pacwa a copy of her book Supremacy and Survival: How Catholics Endured the English Reformation when Fr. Pacwa, the host of “EWTN Live,” was in Wichita last February at Church of the Magdalen.
Her brief meeting is paying off. Mann, a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Wichita, was invited to talk about her book on the Jan. 27 broadcast of EWTN Live.
“After I gave Father a book, I followed up with Doug Keck to make sure he knew Father had a copy,” she said.
Keck is host of EWTN’s Bookmark program during which Keck, a senior vice-president with the Catholic cable network, interviews authors.
Doug’s assistant sent Mann an email with a range of dates, she said, and asked her to choose one. “They’re flying me there, providing housing and meals.”
Mann said she will be on Father Pacwa’s show on Jan. 27 and will tape an episode of Bookmark the next day for later broadcast.
Mann has been traveling a bit to promote her book. Last summer she flew to Oxford, England, and met with booksellers there.
“It was ironic that the English booksellers were highlighting my book as important to their customer’s understanding of English history when I’m an American from the Midwest,” she said. “It was good to see my work reaching an audience that needs to know the whole story about the English Reformation.”
Closer to home, Mann has also visited bookstores in Wichita, Emporia, and Hutchinson for readings and signings. She is using the internet and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to promote her book. Interviews on a nationally broadcast morning show, the “Son Rise Morning Show,” have offered other promotional opportunities. In addition she has written related articles for First Things and The Catholic Answer magazines.
Mann’s book is a survey of 400 years of English history from the reign of Henry VIII to the 19th century. It describes the causes of the English Reformation, the establishment of the state controlled Church of England, and the responses of both Protestant (Puritan) and Catholic dissidents, focusing on the Catholics. When Catholics refused to conform to the official Anglican Church, the state curtailed their rights as citizens – until Catholic emancipation laws were passed by Parliament in 1829.
Mann said she already has an outfit picked out for her EWTN visit. “A friend of mine is giving me advice on make-up,” she said. “I want to be prepared!”
