January Evening of Reflection at SLC explores our desire to seek God
We desire to know God’s will. This desire leads us ever closer to Him and is a great gift! The Jan. 7 offering of an Evening of Reflection at the Spiritual Life Center will focus on this holy desire with a talk from the center’s director, Fr. Kent Hemberger, entitled: Desire: Leading Us to God.
The Evening of Reflection is specially designed for the layperson who may be seeking a mid-week break from their busy schedule. The pace and atmosphere is quiet, relaxed and contemplative. We begin at 5:30 p.m. with a nice meal in the Dining Room. Father Kent follows dinner with a talk connecting everyday life to our spirituality.
After the talk, attendees are invited to Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel of Mary, the First Disciple. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available during this time. The Evening of Reflection concludes with Mass at 8 p.m.
The cost of an Evening of Reflection is $15, and registration can be made online at www.slcwichita.org, then click on Calendar of Events. Pre-registration is required on or before Monday, Jan. 4. Registration can also be made by calling the Center at (316) 744-0167.

Grief support group forming at Spiritual Life Center in January
Professional Grief Share program includes DVD presentations
If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before.
Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Spiritual Life Center is offering the opportunity to join a grief support group called Grief Share. This 13-week series of weekly gatherings, held at the same time on successive Monday evenings, is specifically designed to help those who have suffered the loss of a loved one to death face their challenges and move toward rebuilding their life.
Sessions will be facilitated by Sharon Gagnon, a career educator trained in bereavement ministry who found comfort and peace in her own journey from mourning to joy.
Each session includes a video presentation featuring top experts on grief and recovery subjects. Following the video, group members spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in that week’s video seminar and what is going on in their lives.
The cost of the series is $65, which includes a special workbook that is helpful for ongoing personal study of the grieving process. Registration can be made online at www.SLCWichita.org, or by calling the Center at (316) 744-0167.

‘Ministry of Consolation’ training workshop Jan. 22-23 at the Spiritual Life Center, Wichita
One of the great Spiritual Works of Mercy is comforting. A great corporal work of mercy is burying the dead. Both of these great acts of love come together in a special training workshop being offered at the Spiritual Life Center Jan. 22-23. “A Walk Together” is designed to help parish-based ministers of consolation with the expertise they need to assist the pastor as he tends to the Christian burial of the deceased and the comfort of friends and family.
Two professionals from the National Catholic Ministry to the Bereaved will present the workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, with training continuing on Saturday. It will conclude with a commissioning ceremony and Mass at 5 p.m.
This is a faith-based educational and spiritual learning opportunity. During the sessions participants will learn about the Order of Christian Funerals, the grief and mourning process, listening skills, cultural differences in bereavement and much more. Father Hemberger to offer three-part Prayer series at SLC in Jan.
Prayer is central to the spiritual life of a Christian, for it is in prayer that we encounter God and in this encounter God changes our hearts. The Catholic Tradition includes a rich variety of ways we can do this – some familiar and some new to us.
This three-part evening series with Fr. Kent Hemberger, Director of the Spiritual Life Center, is a practical exploration of prayer with an eye toward providing practical, everyday steps designed to make each person’s prayer life better. The series is being offered on Thursdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Father Kent Hemberger seeks to provide those who come with an overview and experience of several types of prayer including Lectio Divina (Divine Reading), Gospel Contemplation, Centering Prayer and more. This series also teaches ways of understanding and dealing with obstacles to prayer such as distractions and dryness.
The cost of the series is $25 (with full payment on or before Jan. 4), or $30. Registration ends Tuesday, Jan. 12 and can be made by logging onto the Center’s web site at www.SLCWichita.org, and clicking on Calendar of Events, or by calling the Center at (316) 744-0167.
